About Metadataum

A focused, browser-based metadata toolkit for digital images.

What Is Metadataum?

Metadataum is a lightweight, browser-based utility designed to help photographers, designers, and everyday web users inspect and remove supported metadata from digital image files. When photos are captured by cameras or created using digital editing tools, auxiliary technical data is routinely embedded within the file structure. Metadataum provides transparent tools to examine and selectively clean this auxiliary information.

Current Tool Capabilities

Depending on which tool you use on the site, Metadataum supports:

  • Metadata Inspection: Examining detected camera settings, timestamps, GPS geolocation tags, color profile descriptions, AI generation prompt structures, and C2PA Content Credentials manifests.
  • General Metadata Removal: Stripping all supported removable metadata blocks, including EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, and AI provenance records.
  • Targeted AI Metadata Removal: Removing AI generation parameters, prompts, workflows, and C2PA manifests while intentionally preserving standard camera EXIF and GPS tags.
  • Targeted EXIF Removal: Removing camera settings, device records, and embedded GPS coordinates while preserving unrelated image segments.

Supported Image Formats

Current capabilities are strictly engineered for the following image formats:

  • JPEG / JPG: Inspection and container-level APP marker removal.
  • PNG: Inspection and ancillary chunk removal (text, parameters, eXIf, C2PA).
  • WebP: Inspection and Extended WebP chunk removal (EXIF, XMP).

Note: Current tools operate exclusively on these three raster image formats. Non-image formats (such as PDF, video, or audio) are not supported.

Browser-Local Execution

Image inspection and metadata stripping run locally within your web browser using client-side JavaScript. Your image files are read into local browser memory; they are not uploaded to Metadataum servers to perform inspection or cleaning.

Practical Limitations & Scope

We believe in honest technical communication rather than exaggerated claims:

  • Lossless container cleaning: Refers to preserving the compressed visual image payload without re-encoding or introducing re-compression artifacts. It does not mean a file is universally anonymous.
  • Supported removable metadata: Cleaning actions target standard, recognized metadata blocks. They cannot alter visible watermark stamps or pixel-domain watermarks (such as Google SynthID).
  • Absence of metadata: A file without detected metadata may simply have had its headers removed earlier; it does not prove human authorship or original state.
